Should iTunes and MySpace be sweating?

We heard of the news last month that Microsoft had beaten of rival internet giant Google in its bid to buy a share in Facebook and we also heard recently that Facebook is going to launch its version of Myspace music, Facebook Music.

With the ever increasing popularity of facebook as a social networking site, it seem only natural that artists want a page on facebook to showcase there music and spam us all with there latest releses. Artists already use the iLike application on there facebook hompages to do so but the new version of facebook is supposedly going to make it much more user friendly for everyone. So we're more than sure that the Myspace executives are getting a little hot under the collar. Were positive Myspace wont fade into nothingness straight away but it seems with the ever increasing popularity of facebook and the ability to throw sheep at each other with the "Superpoke" application that Facebook music may take Myspace's crown as "(instert artists name here)'s fan club website", as that is basically what myspace is, one giant fan club!

So onto the next point why was Microsoft so desperate to buy that share? the BBC tells us here how much was paid, and its alot!

There is speculation in technology circles that Facebook launching the music pages and the looming launch of the Microsoft Zune mp3 player in europe is one reason the bidding war was so bitter. Is the most popular download store on the web about to be upset by the social networking phenomonon? Push Music believes it could be about to happen. If the guys at facebook are worth there salt, they would have realised what a goldmine they may be sitting on. By offering legal downloads over Facebook music and allowing only the Zune to play them, just as iTunes only allows the iPod to play its downloads.

The next few months could prove to be an interesting time for the music industry, so could we see a MySpace and Apple colaboration any time soon? who knows but it certainly would make sense for Apple to tap into the established artists pages on MySpace, and we think this may be a viable solution if Apple wants to stay ahead of the game.

The Apple iphone.

Perhaps the most anticipated product of 2007 has finally hit our stores, the iPhone was finally unleashed to the British public last night at 6:02pm, but what we want to know here at Push Music is what does this mean for podcasting?

The newest Apple product to hit the stores did certainly cause a stir, with many people forming an orderly oh so British cue, outside London’s flagship Apple store for hours. So what is all the fuss about? The iPhone is really an iPod with a phone taped to the side, isn't it? Well apparently not, it’s really Apples version of the PDA / smart phone. With the main advantage over just having a separate iPod and phone being you can surf the web over a wifi or wap connection. Sadly Apple decided not to take advantage of the high speed 3G system, Steve Jobs (Apple CEO) said on this matter "The 3G chipsets are real power hogs".

So to the main point what does this mean for podcasting? As that is what Push Music is all about. Podcast Pickle, one of the nets leading podcasting sites, announced there mobile site (www.podcastpickle.com/mobile) when the iPhone was released in the states, which is good for us Brits as the site has already been de-bugged and is running smoothly, allowing you to easily search for podcasts while your out and about.

But what about actually downloading podcasts while you’re out? Well the iPhone has the capability to download music files over the mobile version of safari but sadly I feel Apple have missed a trick by not having automated downloads to the mobile version of iTunes, especially as you can download music tracks. You would have thought that would have been a no brainer but apparently it has been a big oversight. so if you did want to get the latest pushcast on to your iPhone you would have to download it at home and synchronize you iPhone or manually view it in mobile safari.

One definite plus on the Podcasting side of things is the apparent ease of creating podcasts with your iPhone, "It turns out one of the things the iPhone does really well is record podcasts. The combination of the adaptive multi-rate format, the iPhone speakerphone, and ad hoc recording scenarios produces a surprisingly solid outcome when combined with the freely available Levelator tool". So creating podcasts using you iPhone can be done but we can’t really see how we would use it seeming to create a podcast we need all our mixers and decks!

So over all we feel the iPhone is a huge jump forward for Apple and is sure to prove hugely popular with users no matter what its pitfalls may be, but there is certainly much room for improvement with this phone. In hindsight perhaps these apparent oversights are just the beginning of future marketing tools for the new versions of the iPhone? But surely a multi million dollar organisation such as apple wouldn't try to fleece it customers like that would they?

The Upbeats: Thinking Cap (feat Georgie)

Awesome track. Awesome video. If you've got the 8am winter blues on a long commute to work this certainly fits the mood. Deep, dark and atmospheric D+B at it's best:

Push Music + Digital.

If you were lucky enough to download this weeks podcast (if not do so now!) you will find at the very end of my mix there’s a remix by Mickey Slim. The song in question is 'The Girls' by Calvin Harris. After hearing that MF mix and falling in love with its dirty electro nonsense we felt compelled to play it to the masses via an MP3.

We searched in vein through iTunes, Beatport, DJDownload. We even looked on Calvin Harris’s label’s website but to no avail. So back to the hunt for plastic, £7 and a search on Juno and we had to wait 2 days to play it.

Now many labels and record shops would emphasise that we getting three tracks for that price of £7. That we own an actual physical record instead of a digital file but did they ask if we really wanted it?

Since Push Music invested in CDJ’s we’ve been progressively buying less and less vinyl, it’s come to the point where we try our darn hardest not to any more. We do miss the artwork, the smell and the durability of vinyl but it’s a lot easier to knock up a 30 minute re-edit when you have the track as an mp3 or Wav.

Digital downloads to us are much more desirable. They’re cheaper, you only pay for the tracks you want, if you scratch your CD you can just burn a new one, they never jump, you can scratch and loop the tracks etc.

The pros of digital go on and on and on and on…

So EMI if you are reading this, stop clutching on to wax please. The record industry woke up, rolled out of its bed in it's plush river facing apartment in Shoreditch 2 years too late to stop any resistance to digital. If music is your business why the hell would you let some one come and steal its distribution away from you anyway. I-Tunes and Apple have switched it up on the majors from under their own noses and paved the way for instant access to music. So don’t make us pay for Vinyl to recoup a loss you inflicted on yourselves.

As vinyl lovers our houses are filled with 12”s from a life time collecting. We’re bored and our arms ache so please stop making us fill our houses with plastic.

On a somber note, boy do we miss the Saturday morning social at the record shop, but when you think about it, it’s a lot easier to download this weeks releases at home, with a cup of tea slice of toast and Soccer AM on in the background.

OVN May have the answer.

Kanye West's plagiarism

As much as Push Music loves the Louis Vitton Don we’re a bit peeved at Kanye’s blatant ‘borrowing’ of ideas. There’s the misconception that the production for ‘Stronger’ was produced by Daft Punk. It wasn’t. Kanye made it from the acapella that’s widely available.

There’s the hijacking of Japanese artists
Takashi Murakami's artwork which doesn’t fulfil the art concept of The College Dropout and Late Registration. There’s the sampling of Michael Jackson’s PYT and the oh so familiar Jonas & François direction for the video for the ‘Good Life’.

We know it’s J+F's visual style but pop star Kanye should innovate not imitate.

With ideas from Daft Punk and Justice it Seems Kayne’s going through his ‘French’ phase which is all Très bien but it’s a long shot from the Kanye‘s glory days of ‘Jesus Walks’ and the awesome video for ‘Touch the Sky’.

Lyrically Mr. West still does it for us and we’re deeply looking forward to the 02 on the 22nd but visually, unless the ideas start flowing the Graduation glory may need to take up that all important year out and we don't mean backpacking around Australia.
